Working in wood has been a Scandinavian pursuit for centuries so it is no wonder that Dean Gundersen would take up carving in wood as an important part of his retirement activities. 
 
Perhaps this interest stems from his grandparents  who emigrated from Horsens, Denmark at the turn of the last century.  Grandpa was a Master Cabinet Maker and applied his skills to early automobile manufacture in Detroit in the days when the interior trim in cars was fashioned in wood.

But whatever the motivation, Dean has been carving steadily since 2002 when he lived just outside of Carson City, Nevada.  Now that he has settled into his home in Sun City, Arizona, he has become a charter member of The Sun City Carvers, a club that welcomes carvers, power carvers, wood burners, and gourd artists.
